Exactly Where You Are

Hunter has no apparent interest in becoming a better cat.

This may be one of his greatest qualities.

He does not wake in the morning wondering whether yesterday was productive enough. He does not compare today's patch of sunlight with the one he found last Tuesday. He has never, as far as we know, developed a five-year plan.

He simply inhabits his life.

There is something almost radical about that.

We spend so much of ours elsewhere. Replaying a conversation. Anticipating the next one. Wondering what someone meant. Imagining what might happen. Measuring where we are against where we thought we would be.

Meanwhile, the chair is comfortable.

The coffee is warm.

Someone we love is sitting across from us.

The sun is coming through the window.

And the moment we were waiting for is already happening.

Hunter doesn't know any of this, of course.

He's just in the chair.

Maybe we could join him.

Where are you, when you are exactly where you are?
